How I Like to Work

I believe that no matter the difficulties we experience, we all value having someone to talk to who is interested, open and empathetic. I am originally from Barbados and have lived in the UK for over 25 years. I have a real interest in people and their stories, and a genuine desire to support them with their difficulties. People I have worked with often describe me as warm, compassionate and easy to talk to.

I start by meeting you where you are, so that you feel heard and understood. From there we make sense of your difficulties together. I want you to feel able to talk openly about whatever is on your mind, and I explain things in plain language rather than jargon. My aim is for you to feel empowered in therapy and in control of the changes you want to make. We then look at what matters to you and how you would like your life to be different, and agree together on the approach that best fits your needs.

I would describe my therapeutic approach as mostly eclectic, using one approach whilst integrating techniques from other therapeutic approaches. I mainly draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). With CBT we build a shared understanding of how your difficulties developed, including the experiences and beliefs that shaped them and what keeps them going now, and use this to work out together which changes will make the most difference. ACT can help by making room for difficult thoughts and feelings rather than struggling against them, so that you can spend more of your time and energy on the things that matter to you. By bringing these together, alongside other approaches, I aim to offer a person-centred approach that helps you improve your quality of life and emotional wellbeing, and to live your life more fully.

I have worked for 20 years in the NHS and the charity sector with people experiencing a wide range of psychological difficulties, including depression and anxiety. I also have a specialist interest in working with people who are adjusting to life events and changes in their circumstances, especially when these are related to their health, such as a cancer diagnosis or another physical illness.

I look forward to working with you and supporting you through the challenges you are facing.
